Crawford AP Environmental Students Surpass the State and Global Average

Updated: Mar 22

Ms. Samson’s AP Environmental Science class tested above the state and global averages in all 22 categories on the AP Environmental Science Exam. The global pass rate (a score of 3, 4, or 5 out of 5) was 52.9%. Ms. Samson’s class pass rate was 90.9% and 82% of her students earned a 4 or 5. This is a remarkable achievement for Crawford students considering only 36% of students globally earned a 4 or 5. Ms. Samson is very proud of how well her students performed and commends her students for working hard all year. She believes that tutoring and Saturday review sessions helped tremendously. She would like to thank Flint Energies, Jersey Wings & Fish, Subway, the Knoxville Store, and Holy Pie for making Saturday review possible. The meals and treats helped keep the students focused on learning and were a great reward for hard work.

Christian Braswell earned a 5 which is the highest score possible on an AP exam. Only 7.9% of students who took the AP Environmental Science exam scored a 5. Christian is the first student in over a decade to earn a 5 at Crawford High School. Ms. Samson nominated and recommended Christian for the Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) program. YYGS is an academic enrichment program for outstanding high school students from around the world. Christian was accepted and enjoyed his time at Yale over the summer.

Ms. Samson credits part of her AP success to the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). She was part of this program at a previous school. She believed that the students at Crawford High School would benefit from NMSI, so she applied for the grant in 2021. Crawford received the NMSI grant, and Ms. Samson served as one of the two school administrators for NMSI. NMSI has allowed students to take AP classes that Crawford cannot offer due to class size requirements. Based on Crawford’s small size, it is difficult to offer multiple AP classes. This is a problem that many high schools in rural communities face throughout the country. The NMSI Rural Access College Readiness Program aims to level the playing field by providing the support and resources necessary for rural high schools to offer as many AP classes as urban schools and private schools.

AP classes are important for preparing students to succeed in college. Students who earn a passing score of 3 or higher on AP exams have a higher likelihood of enrolling in a four-year college, returning for a second year and graduating in four years. NMSI has a proven track record of success and hopefully Crawford will continue to work with NMSI. As part of the NMSI program Crawford students have taken AP Computer Science, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Biology. Earning a passing score on an AP exam allows students to earn college credit at any college or university in the country. Passing AP scores also show colleges that students are ready for college and make students more competitive when applying, especially for scholarships.
