For over two decades I have taught science and inspired numerous students to go into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers. Recently, I participated in STEM nights at two schools, and it was a pleasure to see students and their families so enthusiastic about learning. Unfortunately, due to time constraints not all the attendees had a chance to experience all the planned activities. I felt badly at both events when the school coordinator had to ask the people who were currently viewing my booth to leave because the event was over. It was wonderful to see families so excited about learning that they did not want to go home.
I loved participating in these events, and I wish there were more of them in the area. As a high school science teacher, I always asked students on the first day who liked science. I was disheartened when most students said they did not like science because it was hard and boring. I then asked what they did in their previous science classes. Unfortunately, the majority said that between kindergarten and eighth grade, they had completed hardly any real labs.
Science classes should be fun. My students at public Title-I schools outperformed students at higher ranked public schools and private schools on state and AP tests in part because I incorporated labs and hands-on activities into every unit. I believe that labs are imperative for fostering curiosity and a love for science. Labs are crucial because they are hands-on, allow students to collaborate, and incorporate important skills such as problem solving. Research has shown that elementary school students performed better in reading and math on state assessments when authentic science learning was incorporated with lab work.
Please contact me if you would like to book a lab or STEM event. I have several options you can choose from, and I can plan an experience based on your needs.
